TOKYO: Scientists in Japan said Tuesday an earth tremor measured in the northeast of the Korean peninsula was "different from a normal earthquake".
"The Japanese Meteorlolgical Agency detected the wave is different from a normal earthquake and centred at a latitude of 41.2 North and longitude 129.3 East, which is estimated at magnitude 5.2 when converting to an earthquake," public broadcaster NHK reported.
In a posting on Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's Facebook page, the JMA said the disturbance was shallow and occurred in almost exactly the spot where a quake was recorded at the time of the last nuclear test in May 2009.
Japan's government said it would hold a top level security meeting at 0345 GMT.
