SINGAPORE: More people were caught for buying and selling smuggled cigarettes in 2012.
Singapore Customs said on Friday that the total number of offenders rose by about 2,000 from 26,164 in 2011 to 28,502 in 2012.
They included 402 who were caught peddling contraband cigarettes.
Singapore Customs noted that these peddlers have become more 'creative' by operating in alleys and back lanes, as well as stashing the contraband cigarettes in appliances such as letter boxes, bread wrappers, rice cookers, refrigerators and air compressors.
It also smashed four contraband cigarette syndicates last year.
Singapore Customs said it managed to keep the contraband cigarette supply in check, through strong enforcement with Police and the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority.
The amount of contraband cigarettes seized continued to fall from 1.9 million packets in 2011 to 1.5 million in 2012.
